Eight of Swords Thoth Tarot

Eight of Swords Imagery

Six Indian swords in a variety of styles line up horizontally and are squared off by two longer swords. The use of color makes the swords appear to shimmer in the dark, and the motif of pinwheels appears more spastic than in previous sword cards.

Eight of Swords Associations

  • Formula: Hod of Yetzirah + Jupiter in Gemini = “Interference”
  • Numerical: Continuity, Fluidity
  • Elemental: Mutable Air
  • Decan of the Zodiac: 0º—10º Gemini (May 21—May 30)
  • Sephira: Yetzirah “Glory”
  • Ruled by the Knight of Swords.

Eight of Swords Interpretations

I originally perceived the eight of swords as a predicament between inactivity and activity. In both situations the querent would receive a less-than-desirable sensation by remaining inactive or acting out.

With Thoth I feel the direction is quite different. There is the indication of unfavorable conditions but it more has to do with a state of mind than a state of conditions. In this context it appears to be more about the scattering of concentration. Think of the extensive energy of Jupiter pushing through the restless mind of Gemini. The scene becomes one of frantic, misguided directions.

I think this card indicates unfocused energy, things not adding up the right way. Things can be organized better and less can go to waste.

Additional Interpretations

“Narrow, restricted, petty, a prison. Too much force applied to small things: too much attention to detail at the expense of the principal and more important points. When ill dignified, these qualities produce malice, pettiness, and domineering characteristics. Patience in detail of study; great care in some things, counterbalanced by equal disorder in others. Impulsive; equally fond of giving or receiving money or presents; generous, clever, acute, selfish and without strong feeling of affection. Admires wisdom, yet applies it to small and unworthy objects.” 6

“Interference. Waste of energy in details causing neglect of more important things. Lack of persistence. Sheer, unforeseen bad luck. Restriction. Great care in some things counterbalanced by equal disorder in others.” 5

“Interference. Hod in the suit of Air. Jupiter in Gemini. The centre of the card contains two long Swords pointing down, while six smaller ones suggesting Eastern weapons cross them, three on each side. The card suggests lack of persistence in intellectual matters and accidental interference.” 5

“Interference. Jupiter in Gemini. Hod. The arrangement of these Indian swords covered by two long ones tells of outside obstruction and consequent inability to concentrate the mind.” 5

Axank’s Dream Recall

April 2014
Was at a sandwich shop that actually took place in my shower. The shower bar was accidentally knocked out of the wall in the frenzy of the food-making and fell onto the table. After struggling with getting it back up I showed everyone how to expand the bar into the walls of the shower by twisting it in the middle. The guy next to me who was pleased by this made a dirty joke regarding the quick-fix; I was at home. My mom and little brother were waiting for me to make it down stairs to eat dinner with them. I was so busy with homework but mom kept calling. When I finally made it down there they had finished eating and moved to the other room and were watching on of my little brother’s favorite TV shows. I felt a little sad/upset at myself for missing dinner because I was so distracted by the work I had to do.

While the first dream describes a frenzy and a lot of mind buzzing around a situation, the second dream more closely resembles the distracting/disordering qualities of the eight of swords.
